On the 4th of November, Exponential Science had the pleasure of hosting an inspiring and thought-provoking event at University College London, exploring the intersection of Blockchain and Sustainability. 

The agenda was packed with insightful presentations from leading experts in the field, each shedding light on how blockchain technology can contribute to sustainable development.

Highlights of the Day

  • Sricharan Sanakkayala kicked off the event with a discussion on the tokenization of forests, revealing unexpected utilities in driving climate finance through the Wrapped Carbon Initiative. His talk underscored how Web3 technology is revolutionising sustainability projects.

  • Friederike Kleinfercher from the Max Planck Digital Library brought a governance perspective to the table, showcasing her extensive experience in integrating blockchain into research organisations. Her session on Sustainability from a Blockchain Governance Perspective provided valuable insights into decentralised science initiatives.

  • Delmiro Fernandez-Reyes delved into the socio-economic aspects of blockchain, addressing issues of greed, inequality, and missed opportunities in funding Sustainable Development Goals. His analysis was both critical and enlightening, especially regarding low- and middle-income countries.

  • The afternoon sessions resumed with Chief of Staff of Exponential Science, Juan Ignacio Ibañez, discussing the development of sustainability metrics for the crypto industry. His presentation titled, “Climate-Friendly Infrastructure?”, stressed the importance of measuring and mitigating the environmental impact of cryptocurrencies.

  • Hania Othman from The HBAR Foundation introduced the concept of Digital Public Goods and how they can drive sustainable impact. Her vision of integrating sustainability into financial systems offered a fresh perspective on environmental markets.

  • Raphaël De Ry from ALLCOT spoke on Transforming Climate Action through distributed ledger technologies, emphasising the need for transparency and efficiency in carbon projects to maximise environmental benefits.

  • Krasina Mileva, Co-Founder and COO of DOVU, closed the individual talks with a session on how Carbon Credits Can Benefit Farmers. She highlighted how tokenizing carbon credits can create economic opportunities for farmers while supporting sustainability and climate goals.

Panel Discussion

The event concluded with a dynamic panel discussion featuring Tomaso Aste and Eva Jovanova, among others. The panel explored the broader implications of blockchain technology on sustainability, sparking an engaging dialogue with the audience.
